What is the SAT?
The SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is a multiple choice test used for college entrance examinations. The t
ests are usually taken at the spring of junior year. The schedule allows for retakes so you can improve the score.
The SAT is accepted in virtually all the colleges and universities in the US. Colleges use the SAT to determine your chances of succeeding in the university. The committee reviewing your application will look into your SAT score, hence its importance.
Contents and Scoring
Aside from knowing the SAT test dates, having an idea of the contents will be helpful. The test is separated into three groups: Writing, Critical Reading, and Mathematics. There is also an unscored experimental part. Note, however, that you will not know which one has no score.
Every section is worth 200 to 800 points. The maximum obtainable score is 2400. The lowest is 600. The average score in the US in 2007 is 1511 (494 for writing, 515 for math and 502 for critical reading).
The top universities in the United States require scores of at least 2100. However, these schools also account for your GPA and other school related activities.
How to Prepare for the SAT
One way is to get tutoring. You can find these in the guidance counselor office and on the Internet. There are also classes that can help you prepare for this test. You can also find these on the Web. There are also cheap test prep books you can buy online.
Here are other tips: take out as many wrong choices as possible. These are the extremes (i.e., never, always etc). If you cannot take out one wrong choice, leave it blank. You can guess at the math grid-ins, as there are no penalties. Remember: blank answer = 0 pt; wrong answer = minus 1/4 pt.
After figuring out the SAT test dates, you can start focusing on the test itself. With planning and preparation, you should be able to garner good scores to get to the college of your choice.
